The Ukrainian Helsinki Union opposes the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest in Sofia Cathedral
The Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Ukraine next year, was to be opened in one of the most beautiful and ancient Ukrainian religious buildings - the grand Sophia Cathedral. However, the decision of the Ukrainian authorities outraged the leadership of the Ukrainian Helsinki Union, who said that the organization considers such efforts as "an expression of cultural and religious ignorance, an attempt to impose on the citizens of Ukraine the patterns and customs of mass culture and the desire to replace eternal values."
It is interesting that the statement about the future opening of Eurovision-2017 by UGS was addressed to the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. In addition, the organization reminded the Head of State that St. Sophia of Kyiv is a symbol of both deeply religious and national Ukrainian life.
The representatives of the UGS emphasized that the Sophia Cathedral is a sacred space of our people, suitable only for prayers and not for cultural events. Therefore, any assistance by the state authorities to holding such competitions in the Council will be regarded by the religious community as blasphemy.
