The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is commemorated by the decision of the UN General Assembly of 1 November 2005 (resolution No. 60/7) annually on 27 January. It was on this day in 1945 that the Soviet army liberated prisoners of the largest death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Auschwitz (Poland), which later became a horrific symbol of the Holocaust and Nazi atrocities during World War II. Proclaiming January 27th as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the UN General Assembly called on Member States to develop educational programs to help keep the generations alive in memory of this tragedy in order to prevent acts of genocide in the future. In 2011, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a decision to hold events in Ukraine on January 27 to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the state level.
